Nxeko, the father of Ndungwana was born in approximately 1590 and ruled over AbaThembu kingdom during the 1600s. In the Right Hand House, Nxeko’s twin sons were Ndungwana and Balisa.
And in the Great House, he had Hlanga and Dlomo. As a son of King Nxeko, Ndungwana ruled independently over certain tribes who became part of AbaThembu kingdom in the mid-1600s.
It was through the assistance of Ndungwana that Dlomo ascended the throne, thus denying Hlanga the kingship.
Over the centuries, AmaNdungwana have provided a steady hand as chiefs among AbaThembu and other kingdoms.
The Principal Traditional Leadership of AmaNdungwana, in line with South Africa’s Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act 41 of 2003, resides in the House of Ndarala, base in Banzi Village, Cofimvaba district.
The current regent is Chief Gcinizibele Dyalo, who was appointed after the passing away of Chief Chumasande Ndarala in 2021.
